The BYD Song Plus is sold in plug-in-hybrid DM-i and pure-electric versions, but the correct choice for Kazakhstan depends less on the badge and more on the route, charging access, climate and exact market specification.
Choose the DM-i direction when regular long-distance travel, uncertain charging or remote destinations are central to the use case. Choose the EV direction when most driving is predictable, reliable charging is available and the buyer has verified the exact battery, charging connector and winter operating plan.
Neither version should be purchased from a model name alone.
Quick answer: First identify whether the offered vehicle is DM-i or EV. Then confirm the model year, market version, battery, charging interface, published range test cycle, VIN, software language, condition, documents and Kazakhstan registration route.
Why exact version identification matters
Official BYD documents from different markets show substantial differences.
For example:
- BYD Kazakhstanโs official pages describe a local Song Plus DM-i as a plug-in hybrid and a local Song Plus EV as a pure EV, while also warning that range and energy use vary with operating conditions;
- an official Song Plus DM-i specification published for a Caribbean right-hand-drive market lists an 18.3 kWh battery, Combo 2 charging and NEDC range figures;
- an official Song Plus EV specification published in Colombia lists a 71.8 kWh LFP Blade Battery, CCS Combo 2, quoted DC and AC charging rates, and a 405 km WLTC range;
- BYD Uzbekistan advertises a Song Plus EV with a 605 km CLTC figure.
These figures are not interchangeable. They demonstrate why โSong Plus EVโ or โSong Plus DM-iโ is not enough information for a Kazakhstan purchase.
Before comparing price, ask for:
- left-hand-drive confirmation;
- exact model year and trim;
- China-market or international-market version;
- battery capacity and chemistry;
- charging-port photographs;
- AC and DC charging capability;
- published range and its test cycle;
- motor, engine and drive layout;
- VIN or frame number when available;
- software, map, app and language functions.
DM-i or EV: practical decision table
| Question | Song Plus DM-i direction | Song Plus EV direction |
|---|---|---|
| Daily charging | Helpful but not always essential | Essential for convenient ownership |
| Long intercity routes | More flexible where chargers are uncertain | Requires route and charger planning |
| Urban commuting | Can run partly on electricity | Strong fit with home/work charging |
| Winter range concern | Petrol engine provides route flexibility | Energy use rises with cabin and battery heating |
| Mechanical complexity | Engine, fuel and high-voltage systems | Simpler traction system but fully battery-dependent |
| Maintenance | Engine service plus hybrid checks | EV-specific inspection and battery/charging checks |
| Import category | Hybrid treatment must be confirmed | Pure-EV treatment must be confirmed |
The table is a use-case guide, not a claim that every DM-i or EV version has the same specification.
When the DM-i version is likely to fit better
Consider DM-i if:
- you frequently travel between cities;
- charging availability is inconsistent;
- the vehicle will be used outside major urban areas;
- you need petrol backup during severe weather or route disruption;
- the exact hybrid version and import documents are verified.
However, a DM-i should not be treated as a petrol SUV with an irrelevant battery. Confirm:
- high-voltage battery version and condition;
- charging connector;
- engine and motor identifiers;
- hybrid-system warning lights and diagnostic data;
- cooling circuits;
- fuel grade and maintenance requirements;
- whether the vehicle can operate as expected if not charged regularly.
Published fuel-consumption numbers depend on battery state, route, speed, temperature, load and test cycle. Do not promise a fixed real-world figure.
When the EV version is likely to fit better
Consider EV if:
- overnight charging is available;
- daily distance is predictable;
- public charging on important routes has been checked;
- the charging connector matches local infrastructure or an approved solution exists;
- the buyer accepts winter range variation;
- battery condition and documentation can be verified.
Before purchase, photograph the charge port and confirm:
- connector type;
- AC phase and power capability;
- DC fast-charging capability;
- battery capacity and chemistry;
- thermal-management and battery-heating equipment;
- portable cable and supplied adapters;
- app or account requirements;
- V2L equipment, if important.
An adapter does not automatically solve differences in communication protocol, voltage, earthing, payment or charging power. Compatibility should be confirmed by a Kazakhstan charging specialist.
Winter range in Kazakhstan
Any published range should be presented with its test cycleโsuch as CLTC, NEDC or WLTC/WLTPโand should not be converted into a guaranteed Kazakhstan winter range.
Cold-weather energy use is influenced by:
- outside temperature;
- battery starting temperature;
- preheating while connected to power;
- cabin-heating demand;
- speed and route elevation;
- snow, wind and tyre pressure;
- passengers and cargo;
- battery age and condition.
For an EV buyer, plan a conservative reserve and test the actual route. For DM-i, confirm how the exact vehicle manages cabin heat, battery temperature and engine operation in cold conditions.
Battery and vehicle inspection before payment
Identity and version
- VIN or frame number when available;
- data plate;
- model year and production date;
- LHD confirmation;
- EV or DM-i;
- battery and motor identifiers;
- charging-port close-ups.
Battery evidence
- battery warning lights;
- available diagnostic report;
- state of health only when supported by verifiable data;
- cell-voltage or fault information when available and agreed;
- charging test, if practical;
- damage or repair evidence around the battery enclosure;
- underbody inspection.
General condition
- mileage and registration date;
- exterior, glass, wheels and tyres;
- paint checks for nearly-new or used vehicles;
- cabin, screens and cameras;
- climate control;
- diagnostic scan;
- supplied cables, keys and accessories.
No estimated battery SOH should replace a missing diagnostic result. State clearly when SOH is unavailable.
Kazakhstan import and registration considerations
Kazakhstanโs base VAT rate is 16% from 2026, but the taxable base and application to a specific import must be calculated by the importer or customs representative.
The government registration information distinguishes pure EVs from other M1 passenger vehicles:
- Pure EV: 0.25 MRP up to two years; 25 MRP at two to three years; 250 MRP over three years.
- Other M1 passenger vehicles: 0.25 MRP up to two years; 50 MRP at two to three years; 500 MRP over three years.
The 2026 MRP is KZT 4,325. Under the registration categories reviewed for this guide, a DM-i/PHEV is not a pure EV and belongs in the โother M1โ tier. The exact customs code and all fees still require confirmation from the VIN and documents.
The Eurasian Economic Commissionโs 2026 tariff exemption covers specified volumes for Armenia, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan. It does not list Kazakhstan as a beneficiary and restricts transfers to Kazakhstan residents. A Kazakhstan EV quotation should therefore use a conservative standard-duty assumption unless a local customs representative confirms another currently valid rule.
The utilization-payment method reviewed for this guide applies a zero coefficient to a pure-electric M1 vehicle, excluding hybrids. For a non-pure-EV M1 vehicle imported from China with a documented 1,001โ2,000 cc engine, the published base and coefficient produce a nominal KZT 756,875 on the 2026 MRP. This is not a universal quote: confirm powertrain classification, engine displacement, origin and the live payment-system result.
The exact vehicle must also be checked for conformity under TR CU 018/2011 and for Kazakhstan registration by VIN and document set. Before paying a deposit, obtain written confirmation of the SBKTS route, applicant/importer identity and electronic vehicle passport path. Official guidance warns that a mismatch between the SBKTS applicant and customs declarant can block the electronic passport and registration.
Landed-cost layers
A Song Plus quotation should separate:
- exact vehicle and condition;
- China-side inspection;
- domestic transport and preparation;
- export documents;
- international transport;
- cargo insurance, if included;
- customs processing and duty;
- VAT;
- recycling or producer-responsibility payment;
- conformity and electronic vehicle documentation;
- initial registration;
- broker, terminal and delivery-to-city expenses;
- charging cable, approved adapter or charging installation where required;
- winter tyres and low-temperature preparation;
- bank charges and exchange-rate movement;
- post-registration insurance and annual vehicle tax, stated separately.
For EV transport, the carrier may also require battery-related handling or state-of-charge conditions. These must be confirmed for the actual route.
Which version should you choose?
Choose DM-i for further investigation if long routes and uncertain charging dominate, but verify the hybrid battery, engine, connector and classification.
Choose EV for further investigation if daily charging is reliable and routes are predictable, but verify connector compatibility, winter range planning, SOH and the standard Kazakhstan import-cost scenario.
Do not proceed with either version if the seller cannot identify the powertrain, battery, connector, VIN/document path or real vehicle condition.

Frequently asked questions
Is Song Plus DM-i better than Song Plus EV for Kazakhstan?
Not universally. DM-i is usually easier to consider for long routes with uncertain charging; EV can be better for predictable daily driving with reliable charging.
Can I use the advertised CLTC range as my winter range?
No. CLTC, NEDC and WLTC/WLTP are test-cycle figures. Winter range varies with temperature, heating, speed, route, load and battery condition.
Is Kazakhstanโs 2026 EV customs exemption available?
The EECโs published 2026 exemption names Armenia, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan, not Kazakhstan. Recheck the current rule before quotation.
Is a charging-port photograph enough?
It is necessary but not sufficient. Confirm connector, protocol, AC/DC capability, voltage, supplied cable and compatibility with the intended charger.
Can battery SOH always be provided?
No. SOH should only be stated when a verifiable diagnostic result is available for the specific vehicle.
Does a DM-i receive the same registration treatment as a pure EV?
Do not assume so. Ask a Kazakhstan customs or registration specialist to classify the exact vehicle using its VIN and documents.
